Top 5 Brunches

Brunch is one of life’s great compromises. Sleep in, and eat well – deliciously well, that is. Since McDonald’s takes away pancakes at 10:30, stop by one of these five places to get some food at that delicate time between sleep and dinner.
Whitlow’s on Wilson
While Whitlow’s offers tons of fun on any night of the week, head on back in the morning for a brunch that is not to be missed. Although there is plenty to choose from on the menu, the buffet is what draws the crowd. From 10am – 3pm on Sunday, eat all you can for just $14.95 (kids are just $5.95).
2854 Wilson Boulevard
(703) 276-9693
Harry’s Tap Room
For a classy brunch outing, stop by Harry’s Tap Room, where the specialty drink list is nearly as long as the omelet menu. Choose from a Classic Sparkling Mimosa or a Weekend at Harry’s Coffee – either is sure to be an eye-opener. Other options include eggs Florentine, smoked salmon omelet or steakhouse benedict.
2800 Clarendon Boulevard
(703) 778-7788
Freddie’s Beach Bar
For something a little different, try Freddie’s champagne brunch and “diner-style” breakfast from 11am-3pm on Sundays. Options are limited, but offer something a little different, such as sweet potato pancakes and eggs ranchero (tortilla shell filled with eggs, tomato, salsa, cheese, sour cream and guacamole). At $7 each, how can you go wrong?
555 South 23rd Street
(703) 685-0555
Boulevard Woodgrill
If for nothing else, go to Boulevard Woodgrill’s brunch for a Kir de Noir. It’s an eight dollar beverage which includes Massenez Crème de Blackberry mixed with sparkling wine. If you decide to have something else, try the Norwegian salmon hollandaise, which is served with home fries and asparagus. For $11.95, it is a delicious combination of breakfast and lunch.
2901 Wilson Boulevard
(703) 875-9663
Caribbean Breeze
Every Sunday, 10:30am-3pm, Caribbean Breeze brings Sunday brunch to “a whole new latitude,” as they say. They’re not kidding. From a paella station to tapas and roasted pig on a stick, the Breeze offers a menu worlds away from other neighborhood options.

Gold’s Gym Ballston
3910 Wilson Blvd
Arlington, VA 22203
(703) 516-4653
Gold’s Gym Ballston is the 800 pound gorilla of the Arlington area fitness scene. They have over 4500 square feet of workout space and over 200 pieces of cardio equipment. Unfortunately, they also have over 7,000 members, so things can get a little cramped at peak hours. Parking is woefully inadequate, so use mass transit or run to the gym whenever possible. You may also use any of the other 3 Gold’s locations in Arlington or any of the dozen or so total locations in the DC Metro area.

aka Spot
2509 N. Franklin Road
Arlington, Virginia 22201
(703) 248-0093
OK. Admit it. You know you want to put something under the tree for your dog. For $25 you can bring home a Busy Budy chew toy, some liver treats to put inside, and some little antlers for your pooch. He might not want to wear the antlers, but if they stay on long enough for just one picture, it’s worth it.
CD Cellar
2614 Wilson Blvd
Arlington, VA 22201
(703) 248-0635
It might sound a little tacky to give used CDs as holiday presents, but most everyone nowadays downloads the music to their MP3 player and ditches the discs anyway. There are many different options, but we found ACDC’s Back in Black, The Door’s LA Woman, and The Beatle’s White Album for a grand total of $25. That is some serious classic rock, all of which is not available on iTunes.
Eastern Mountain Sports
1020 N Hudson St
Arlington, VA 22201
(703) 228-4694
For the camper, trail runner, or friend on your list that just likes to skulk around in the dark, EMS has a great selection of headlamps and LED flashlights. Let’s talk about some real holiday cheer. Ten little flight attendant-sized bottles of booze will cost right around $20. The options are nearly limitless. A little tequila, a little bourbon, a little vodka, and a little Jagermeister will really spice up that boring office party. Please note: we here at Arlington Unwired take no responsibility for embarrassing situations under the mistletoe.

Top 5 Halloween Haunts
The Robert E. Lee Memorial
Arlington National Cemetery
Arlington, Virginia 22211
(703) 235-1530
The mansion on the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery that was once the home of Robert E. Lee, as well as descendants of George Washington, and is now used as a memorial to General Lee, is rumored to be haunted by the spirits of children. The sounds of children playing and talking, footsteps walking through the house, as well as ghostly apparitions have been reported throughout various locations on the property.
Potomac Overlook Regional Park
2845 N. Marcey Road
Arlington, Virginia 22207
(703) 528-5406
The spirits of Native Americans who once lived in the area are said to be heard swimming in the Potomac River and roaming the trails of this peaceful 70 acre wooded park in North Arlington.
On Saturday, October 27, beginning at 7:30, the annual Haunted Halloween Hike returns for a family friendly romp through the woods. Admission fee is $10. Reservations are required.
Arlington National Cemetery
Arlington, Virginia 22211
(703) 607-8000
Arlington National Cemetery is the final resting place of over 300,000 soldiers and civilians. The cemetery has over 200 acres of hallowed ground. The cemetery contains the final resting place of veterans from every American conflict. The wind often whistles through the hundreds of thousands of headstones, sometimes creating uneasy ghostly voices and wails. Also, unexplained appearances have been sighted in the cemetery, including reports of a marching Civil War soldier.
Clarendon Ballroom
3185 Wilson Blvd
Arlington, VA 22201
(703) 469-2244
On Saturday, October 27, the freaks come out at night, at the Clarendon Ballroom Monster Bash. Reportedly the largest Halloween party in the DC Metro area for 15 years running, prizes for best costumes start at $200 cash. Costumes are definitely required and originality rules, so bring out your best slutty panda ensemble. Entry starts at $10, but will increase to $20 later in the evening. Lines for this party have been known to stretch around the block, so some pre-lubricating might not be a bad idea.
Masters Costumes
3840 South Four Mile Run Drive
Arlington, VA 22206
(703) 820-8880
Masters Costumes has been serving the DC Metro area for over 20 years with 5 locations in Northern Virginia. They are fully loaded with rental costumes, wigs, masks, makeup, and just about any prosthetic your warped mind can imagine. Plan ahead though, because the selection can go fast and you’ll be left waiting outside for the Great Pumpkin… you blockhead!

Top 5 Chicken Wings
Buffalo D's Wings and Things
4213 N Fairfax Dr
Arlington, VA 22201
(703) 465-8888
D’s is a little hole in the wall directly across from the Ballston metro. Because of the location, it seems to attract an eclectic mix of suits and a few suspects. With about 20 different sauces to choose from, D’s dominates the Arlington wing scene. What the hell is a Montreal wing anyway? It sounds like a weird sexual position.
Oh yeah, their happy hour lasts from 4:00pm until 9:00pm every weeknight. That's a FIVE HOUR HAPPY HOUR! $2.00 rails and $2.25 drafts for FIVE hours every weekday, plus half-price wings on Wednesday, make for a super cheap night out.
Mister Days Sport Rock Cafe
3100 Clarendon Blvd
Arlington, VA 22201
(703) 527-1600
The walls of Mister Days are virtually paneled with flat screen TVs. Unless you are looking for something super obscure like the India vs. Pakistan cricket match, there’s little chance that Days will not be showing the big game.
Although the sauce assortment is limited, on Friday’s they serve up 25 wings for $5.00. For those of you that don’t have what it takes to eat a mountain of hot wings, Days also serves up half orders for a meager $2.00 every Wednesday.
Ireland's Four Courts
2051 Wilson Boulevard
Arlington, VA 22201
(703) 525-3600
Once while traveling in Ireland, a dude told me that he liked a certain pub because they had great crack. I wasn’t sure if he was talking about drugs or some slang term for big rumps, so he explained that “craic” is an Irish term used to describe a fun and relaxed atmosphere. With live music every Wednesday through Sunday and no cover, Four Courts has the market cornered on “craic” in the Arlington pub scene.
Surprisingly enough, Four Courts also has some of the tastiest and plumpest wings in Arlington. Wednesday night wing specials include half-priced jumbo wings.
Continental: Modern Pool Lounge
1911 N. Fort Myer Drive
Arlington, VA 22209
(703) 465-7675
The Continental is a difficult place to categorize. Yes, it is a pool hall, but with design elements from a 50’s diner, a 60’s tiki room, and a retro 70’s space age bar, it really blurs the lines between lounge, bar, and restaurant. The overall design is a little reminiscent of Jack Rabbit Slim’s from Pulp Fiction.
The Continental also has one of the only weekend happy hours in Arlington. Beyond just killer drink specials, they serve up half-price wings during happy hour Monday-Friday 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm and Saturday and Sunday 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm.
Ledo Pizza
1035 S Edgewood St
Arlington, VA 22204
(703) 521-5336
If you are not feeling particularly social and want to chill out on the couch while you grub some wings and watch football, Ledo Pizza is the place for take-out. Ledo’s Famous Wings are absolutely massive. They look more like some pterodactyl wings that might be served up on the Flintstones.
Ledo’s also offers a Buffalo chicken pizza for those that can’t commit to either wings or a pie, but there’s trouble in paradise because Ledo’s does not deliver. So get up of your butt and hit the road, otherwise you are going to miss the kickoff!

Harry’s Tap Room
2800 Clarendon Boulevard
Arlington, VA 22201
(703) 778-7788
For a classy brunch outing, stop by Harry’s Tap Room, where the specialty drink list is nearly as long as the omelet menu. Choose from a Classic Sparkling Mimosa or a Weekend at Harry’s Coffee – either is sure to be an eye-opener. Other options include eggs Florentine, smoked salmon omelet or steakhouse benedict.
Freddie’s Beach Bar
555 South 23rd Street
Crystal City, VA 22202
(703) 685-0555
For something a little different, try Freddie’s champagne brunch and “diner-style” breakfast from 11am-3pm on Sundays. Options are limited, but offer something a little different, such as sweet potato pancakes and eggs ranchero (tortilla shell filled with eggs, tomato, salsa, cheese, sour cream and guacamole). At $7 each, how can you go wrong?
Boulevard Woodgrill
2901 Wilson Boulevard
Arlington, VA 22201
(703) 875-9663
If for nothing else, go to Boulevard Woodgrill’s brunch for a Kir de Noir. It’s an eight dollar beverage which includes Massenez Crème de Blackberry mixed with sparkling wine. If you decide to have something else, try the Norwegian salmon hollandaise, which is served with home fries and asparagus. For $11.95, it is a delicious combination of breakfast and lunch.
Caribbean Breeze
4100 North Fairfax Drive
Arlington, VA 22203
(703) 812-7997
Every Sunday, 10:30am-3pm, Caribbean Breeze brings Sunday brunch to “a whole new latitude,” as they say. They’re not kidding. From a paella station to tapas and roasted pig on a stick, the Breeze offers a menu worlds away from other neighborhood options.

Top 5 Places to Watch the Fireworks
Skip the crowds and the hassle of security down on the Mall and enjoy the numerous July 4th activities at local bars, restaurants, and parks around the county. Most important, before the National fireworks display sets off at 9:10pm EST, situate yourself at one of the spots detailed below and enjoy the best views Arlington has to offer.
Gateway Park/Key Bridge
Situated an easy walk from the nightlife of Georgetown and an even easier walk to the bars and restaurants in Rosslyn, Gateway Park is just that. It’s also not a bad place to catch the fireworks silhouetting the Kennedy Center across the Potomac. The Park is generally filled with last-minute revelers and those passing through between Arlington and Georgetown. Not a whole lot of planning is required to snag a sweet seat from the elevated portion of the park, and there are plenty of “standing-room” areas that are easily accessible if you are hustling down there ten minutes before the start of the show. Gateway Park does have bathrooms and water fountains for those who might get there a little earlier.
Once the glow of the fireworks has faded, crowds disperse rather quickly, resuming their evenings in Rosslyn, Courthouse, or Clarendon.
Parking is available along Lee Highway and many of its side streets. DO NOT park at Colony House or any of the other restaurant parking lots in the neighborhood. The towing companies act like vultures on the 4th of July, and will ruin your night if you let them. Taking Metro to the Rosslyn station (Orange/Blue Line) makes life even easier.
Gravelly Point/Fort Hunt Park
Fireworks aren’t the only things gracing the skies at Gravelly Point. Every hour, up to thirty planes land and take off from National Airport, careening excitingly close to your seating area. Downside: pausing your conversation every two minutes can get annoying. The crowd at Gravelly Point is composed mostly of all-dayers. So, unless you plan to join the marathon types and arrive in the a.m. with your barbeque set in tow, it would be wise to leave the car at home and ride Metro…or your bike. National Airport (Blue/Yellow Line) is the closest stop. When you exit, make your way to the bike path and head North. If you drive, the main parking lot is only accessible if you are heading North on GW Parkway. There is limited parking in the lot across the Parkway if you are heading southbound, towards Alexandria. Remember, these lots fill up fast!
Lady Bird Johnson Park
With the Washington Monument directly across the river, Lady Bird Johnson Park places you the closest, physically, to the fireworks on the Mall. This means you don’t necessarily have to grab a spot on the river to get a great view of the show. Accessible by car, it’s a bit further from its closest Metro stop (Arlington Cemetery, Blue Line), so there are less barbeques and stereos than at Gravelly Point, providing a more subdued experience than the party taking place by the airport.
Even with lots on both sides of George Washington Parkway, parking is even less readily available than at Gravelly Point. Parking lots are accessible from both the North and Southbound lanes. Lady Bird Johnson Park is located directly on the bike path, making two wheels the easiest and most efficient means of getting there.
Iwo Jima Memorial
What better reminder of the American spirit and our willingness to fight and defend freedom and liberty than the Iwo Jima Memorial? Pick a spot on one of the grassy islands dissected by the Route 50 interchange and enjoy the fireworks with a majestic and inspiring backdrop. The crowds at Iwo Jima generally arrive late and haphazardly, so if it’s getting close to 9pm and you’re trying to figure out how you’re going to catch the firework display, this might be a good option. Like Gateway Park, the crowds disperse rather quickly following, so ride the wave towards the holiday nightlife in Arlington! Parking in the neighborhood surrounding the Iwo Jima Memorial is sparse, but Metro makes things super easy. The Memorial is .20 miles from the Rosslyn Metro (Orange/Blue Line).
Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, Crystal City
Situated on the 11th floor of 2231 Crystal Drive, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse offers a no-frills opportunity to watch the fireworks from the comfort of your dinner table, and the comfort of air-conditioning. Ruth’s Chris operates on July 4th like it’s any other day, with it’s standard hours and menu, but don’t forget to look out the window a little after 9pm to catch what you went there for. Make reservations online or by phone.
Validated parking is available in the building, and Metro is close by, Crystal City station (Blue/Yellow Line).

Getting Home
Everyone should have a good time to celebrate our nation’s birthday, but it’s also important to stay safe. The folks at Sober Ride recognize this and are offering taxi service from 4pm on July 4 until 4am on July 5. As long as your fare is under $50, Sober Ride picks up the tab. If you exceed the $50 fare (and you’d have to drive to Dulles to do so), you simply pay the difference. If there’s any question about how much you had to drink and your ability to drive, please call 1-800-200-TAXI.
If you’re anxious to get to bed, plan ahead and call thirty minutes to an hour before you’d actually want to be picked up, as Sober Ride is a popular service, and wait times are often long. It’s still a great deal for all of us in Arlington and an easy way to keep the streets (and your driving record), safe and clean.
Note: In order to be dispatched to the correct taxi service, you must call from a VA number. In this case it’s our very own Red Top Cab of Arlington. So, don’t borrow an out-of-towners phone to make your call and you’ll get home without a hitch and keep our roads safe.
Have a happy Fourth of July!

It’s March and St. Patrick’s Day is next Monday!
But let’s face it – in the month of March, everyone digs deep for some inkling of Irish heritage, and St. Paddy’s Day celebrations last all month long. Here are some of the best places in Arlington to down a pint of Irish ale. Slainte!

Location, location, location. Sine Irish Pub is located on Pentagon Row, steps from ice skating and endless shopping options. Restaurant options abound in this area too, but if you’re looking for a hearty meal and great service, choose Sine. Even with Guinness topping the appetizer menu (a great way to start a meal, they say), the rest of the options carry their weight – from traditional Irish recipes to chicken cheesesteak, all palettes will be pleased here.

O’Sullivan’s is already counting down to Street Patrick’s Day. If you are too, check out this pub’s truly authentic Irish traditions – including Ceili dancing, music sessions and singsongs. The menu offers Killarney salmon and shepherd’s pie, but be forewarned: unlike other Irish pubs in the area, this menu is almost entirely Irish. You’ll find no cheesesteaks here.
3207 Washington Boulevard
(703) 812-0939

Top 5 Ways to Help Around the Holidays
This time of year presents opportunities for everyone to give
back to the Arlington community. More than 50 nonprofit
organizations benefit our area, and they could use your help.
Following are five ways you can help around the holidays and
year-round.
Join a Food Drive
Clean out your pantry for a good cause. Shelters and soup kitchens always
need food. Donate only nonperishable items, unless an organization requests
otherwise. For more on local needs, click over to the
Arlington Food Assistance
Center or the
Arlington-Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless.
Sponsor a Giving Tree
Request a holiday wish list from your favorite charity, then write out each
item on a separate note and affix these to the branches of a small pine.
Place your giving tree in your workplace, worship hall, etc., so people can
pick and purchase a gift—perhaps household items for
Doorways for Women and
Families, or hygiene products for the
Arlington Street People
Assistance Network, or maybe books for the
Reading
Connection.
Volunteer
Most nonprofits rely on volunteers to fulfill their respective missions.
Consider building houses with
Arlington Habitat for
Humanity, walking sheltered pets for the
Animal Welfare League of
Arlington or clearing a stream with Arlingtonians
for a Clean Environment.
Participate in a Fund-Raiser
A nonprofit’s lifeblood, fund-raisers also depend on volunteer time and
effort, not to mention donor support, to be a success. Prominent
organizations like the
Arlington Red
Cross throw major annual galas, while smaller organizations such
as the
Arlington Philharmonic sponsor more modest neighborhood gatherings.
Serve as an Officer
If you’ve been swept up in the spirit of giving, consider volunteering
year-round on a nonprofit’s board of directors. Officers provide financial
and program oversight and typically serve a two- to four-year term. Contact
your chosen organization for more information.
A word of caution and encouragement: Local nonprofits
take hundreds of calls from would-be volunteers around the
holidays. Browse an organization’s Web site for specifics before
you call. Have you thought about making a year-round commitment? |
