Every major metropolitan city has fights over who serves the best pizza, or who cooks up the best burger. But Arlington is one of the few places where genuine arguments break out over the most delicious source for Peruvian chicken. These places have many things in common – rotisserie-cooked "pollo a la brasa", fat, greasy French fries, insanely low prices, and rather dingy interiors. But a few are worth patronizing above the rest.

The underdog of the two top contenders, Crisp N Juicy may not have quite the cult following as our #2 pick, but we'll take its perfectly spicy chicken, delicately fried yucca, and plentiful mix of side dishes (plantains, anyone?) any day. Every meal is made to order (resulting in slightly slower service than some of its counterparts), and the interior of the place has kind of a soda-counter charm to it. It also boasts the yummiest "green sauce" in the area – theirs is more garlicky than spicy, but has a distinctive flavor. The only possible cause for complaint – it doesn't always live up to its name in the "crispy" department (particularly if you get it to-go).

No restaurant in Arlington has more ardent followers, most who refer to the restaurant's main dish as "crack chicken". Sure, the Wheaton location has been closed twice for fires, and the owners recently pled guilty for money laundering. Don't hold it against the chicken, which is the crispiest in the area, consistently fresh, and always nicely spiced. Your only options for sides are pretty much cole slaw and fries, but don't fret - you're there for the chicken. Wash it down with an Inca cola, and you're golden.

Crisp N Juicy and El Pollo Rico are really the two main games in town, but Pio Pio is an underrated utility player situated just between Clarendon and Rosslyn. Its side selection rivals Crisp N Juicy, and the place actually offers a decent amount of room for sitting down, even if the atmosphere is rather fast-food style in nature. Biggest problem: since Pio Pio isn't as popular as its competition, the sides can sit around neglected and lose their luster.

Super Pollo holds the honor of being perhaps the only Peruvian chicken joint to serve chicken fried rice. That, along with other unique sides such as chickpeas and soup, helps distinguish the restaurant from the lot (it's also even cheaper than its affordable counterparts). The chicken is a bit saltier than other offerings, but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. Another bonus point: they take credit cards, though you might get stuck with a surcharge if your order's too small. Come for the chicken, stay for the Spanish soap operas playing in the dining room.

Located just on the border of Falls Church and Arlington, the chicken here pales a little in spiciness and crispiness to the others, but the service is super quick, and the menu offers some options beyond the standard quarter and whole bird variety. Try the chicken sandwich or the gyro, and wash it all down with a creamy horchata, a rice-based, chocolate-y beverage popular in Latin America.

Nintendo's latest video game console has become the toy to have, for kids and adults like, what with variations that mimic nearly every sport out there. So it only makes sense that bars and night spots would capitalize on this trend, allowing patrons to play while they guzzle down beverages and chomp on cuisine. The owners of this neighborhood bar in the heart of Crystal City want you to turn their place into your own bowling alley, golf course or tennis court. D's is a little hole in the wall directly across from the Ballston metro. Because of the location, it seems to attract an eclectic mix of suits and a few suspects. With about 20 different sauces to choose from, D's dominates the Arlington wing scene. What the hell is a Montreal wing anyway? It sounds like a weird sexual position.

The walls of Mister Days are virtually paneled with flat screen TVs. Unless you are looking for something super obscure like the India vs. Pakistan cricket match, there's little chance that Days will not be showing the big game.

Once while traveling in Ireland, a dude told me that he liked a certain pub because they had great crack. I wasn't sure if he was talking about drugs or some slang term for big rumps, so he explained that "craic" is an Irish term used to describe a fun and relaxed atmosphere. With live music every Wednesday through Sunday and no cover, Four Courts has the market cornered on "craic" in the Arlington pub scene.

Surprisingly enough, Four Courts also has some of the tastiest and plumpest wings in Arlington. Wednesday night wing specials include half-priced jumbo wings.

The Continental is a difficult place to categorize. Yes, it is a pool hall, but with design elements from a 50's diner, a 60's tiki room, and a retro 70's space age bar, it really blurs the lines between lounge, bar, and restaurant. The overall design is a little reminiscent of Jack Rabbit Slim's from Pulp Fiction.

The Continental also has one of the only weekend happy hours in Arlington. Beyond just killer drink specials, they serve up half-price wings during happy hour Monday-Friday 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm and Saturday and Sunday 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm.

If you are not feeling particularly social and want to chill out on the couch while you grub some wings and watch football, Ledo Pizza is the place for take-out. Ledo's Famous Wings are absolutely massive. They look more like some pterodactyl wings that might be served up on the Flintstones.

Ledo's also offers a Buffalo chicken pizza for those that can't commit to either wings or a pie, but there's trouble in paradise because Ledo's does not deliver. So get up of your butt and hit the road, otherwise you are going to miss the kickoff!

Skip the crowds and the hassle of security down on the Mall and enjoy the numerous July 4th activities at local bars, restaurants, and parks around the county. Most important, before the National fireworks display sets off at 9:10pm EST, situate yourself at one of the spots detailed below and enjoy the best views Arlington has to offer.

Situated an easy walk from the nightlife of Georgetown and an even easier walk to the bars and restaurants in Rosslyn, Gateway Park is just that. It's also not a bad place to catch the fireworks silhouetting the Kennedy Center across the Potomac. The Park is generally filled with last-minute revelers and those passing through between Arlington and Georgetown. Not a whole lot of planning is required to snag a sweet seat from the elevated portion of the park, and there are plenty of "standing-room" areas that are easily accessible if you are hustling down there ten minutes before the start of the show. Gateway Park does have bathrooms and water fountains for those who might get there a little earlier.

Once the glow of the fireworks has faded, crowds disperse rather quickly, resuming their evenings in Rosslyn, Courthouse, or Clarendon.

Parking is available along Lee Highway and many of its side streets. DO NOT park at Colony House or any of the other restaurant parking lots in the neighborhood. The towing companies act like vultures on the 4th of July, and will ruin your night if you let them. Taking Metro to the Rosslyn station (Orange/Blue Line) makes life even easier.

Fireworks aren't the only things gracing the skies at Gravelly Point. Every hour, up to thirty planes land and take off from National Airport, careening excitingly close to your seating area. Downside: pausing your conversation every two minutes can get annoying. The crowd at Gravelly Point is composed mostly of all-dayers. So, unless you plan to join the marathon types and arrive in the a.m. with your barbeque set in tow, it would be wise to leave the car at home and ride Metro…or your bike. National Airport (Blue/Yellow Line) is the closest stop. When you exit, make your way to the bike path and head North. If you drive, the main parking lot is only accessible if you are heading North on GW Parkway. There is limited parking in the lot across the Parkway if you are heading southbound, towards Alexandria. Remember, these lots fill up fast!

With the Washington Monument directly across the river, Lady Bird Johnson Park places you the closest, physically, to the fireworks on the Mall. This means you don't necessarily have to grab a spot on the river to get a great view of the show. Accessible by car, it's a bit further from its closest Metro stop (Arlington Cemetery, Blue Line), so there are less barbeques and stereos than at Gravelly Point, providing a more subdued experience than the party taking place by the airport.

Even with lots on both sides of George Washington Parkway, parking is even less readily available than at Gravelly Point. Parking lots are accessible from both the North and Southbound lanes. Lady Bird Johnson Park is located directly on the bike path, making two wheels the easiest and most efficient means of getting there.

What better reminder of the American spirit and our willingness to fight and defend freedom and liberty than the Iwo Jima Memorial? Pick a spot on one of the grassy islands dissected by the Route 50 interchange and enjoy the fireworks with a majestic and inspiring backdrop. The crowds at Iwo Jima generally arrive late and haphazardly, so if it's getting close to 9pm and you're trying to figure out how you're going to catch the firework display, this might be a good option. Like Gateway Park, the crowds disperse rather quickly following, so ride the wave towards the holiday nightlife in Arlington! Parking in the neighborhood surrounding the Iwo Jima Memorial is sparse, but Metro makes things super easy. The Memorial is .20 miles from the Rosslyn Metro (Orange/Blue Line).

Everyone should have a good time to celebrate our nation's birthday, but it's also important to stay safe. The folks at Sober Ride recognize this and are offering taxi service from 4pm on July 4 until 4am on July 5. As long as your fare is under $50, Sober Ride picks up the tab. If you exceed the $50 fare (and you'd have to drive to Dulles to do so), you simply pay the difference. If you're anxious to get to bed, plan ahead and call thirty minutes to an hour before you'd actually want to be picked up, as Sober Ride is a popular service, and wait times are often long. It's still a great deal for all of us in Arlington and an easy way to keep the streets (and your driving record), safe and clean.

This time of year presents opportunities for everyone to give back to the Arlington community. More than 50 nonprofit organizations benefit our area, and they could use your help. Following are five ways you can help around the holidays and year-round.

Clean out your pantry for a good cause. Shelters and soup kitchens always need food. Donate only nonperishable items, unless an organization requests otherwise. For more on local needs, click over to the Arlington Food Assistance Center or the Arlington-Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless.

Request a holiday wish list from your favorite charity, then write out each item on a separate note and affix these to the branches of a small pine. Place your giving tree in your workplace, worship hall, etc., so people can pick and purchase a gift—perhaps household items for Doorways for Women and Families, or hygiene products for the Arlington Street People Assistance Network, or maybe books for the Reading Connection.

Most nonprofits rely on volunteers to fulfill their respective missions. Consider building houses with Arlington Habitat for Humanity, walking sheltered pets for the Animal Welfare League of Arlington or clearing a stream with Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment.

A nonprofit's lifeblood, fund-raisers also depend on volunteer time and effort, not to mention donor support, to be a success. Prominent organizations like the Arlington Red Cross throw major annual galas, while smaller organizations such as the Arlington Philharmonic sponsor more modest neighborhood gatherings.

If you've been swept up in the spirit of giving, consider volunteering year-round on a nonprofit's board of directors. Officers provide financial and program oversight and typically serve a two- to four-year term. Contact your chosen organization for more information.
