How it all started…

Standing just a few miles from nearby Washington DC, across the scenic Potomac River, is the historic Arlington County. Arlington was originally named Alexandria County and was one of the first two counties formed within the District of Columbia. In 1847, due to matters involving congressional representation, abolition, and economic decline, the county was returned to the Commonwealth of Virginia. To avoid confusion with the city of Alexandria, Alexandria County was renamed Arlington County in 1920.

Today, Arlington is a diverse region that is the smallest self-governing county in the United States and contains over 210,000 residents. The county is renowned for being the home to legendary landmarks: the Arlington National Cemetery, the Pentagon, Iwo Jima Memorial, U.S. Airforce Memorial, and the Roosevelt Island.

Surprisingly, the 26 square mile county encompasses a diverse range of urban villages, which offer everything from thriving business districts to charming neighborhoods. The county uses its metro and bus systems as a foundation for smart-growth, encouraging business development while preserving these unique neighborhoods. Arlington is particularly well placed for day trips and excursions due to the county's emphasis on pedestrian access, safe bike lanes, and fantastic public transportation options.
